Sunday Night FootballHere are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

NBC hits #1! OK, it’s football and it’s probably a temporary thing (plus it’s the holidays), but they did it, and NBC even got a few more shows into the top 20 (even if they were temporary reality shows). I’m getting a tiny sick of typing the letters “CBS” each and every week though, at least when they’re attached to shows like CSI. Interesting that 60 Minutes hit #3, considering it was a repeat.

I found a great ‘who cares’ quote w/link about leadership vs. management at Raven’s Brain. It was followed up few days later by a post at Gura’s Blog,

I got into a Leadership program at work. One of the main points is defining the difference between management and leadership. The jist is that management deals with specific tasks and functions and that leadership deals with people. You don’t have to be a manager to be a good leader. As the Kali lessons have repeated time and time again, to be a good leader, you have to also be a good follower and thus the term of “managing up.” I personally dislike the business jargon that implies a one-way street in leadership and/or management. Yes, a leader must step forward, but before the step is taken they’ve to do a lot of listening and observation and be aware if anyone is actually following them in the direction they’re going into.

oneway_twoway.jpg

Smart gal—one-way streets exist only in the imagination as long as the people involved can walk away.

It’s a fascinating blog by a real person, sans MBA, who is following a more patient career path than you find in the US. Reading through some of the other posts, you get a good sense of who/how she’s at work and at home.

Gura is acting manager now that her boss retired and, based on the person revealed in the blog, if her senior managers have any sense they’ll make it permanent in June.

Just an aside, but Gura’s writing skills will bring tears to the eyes of most American managers when they realize that she’s in the Philippine’s.

TrumpGuess which company had the most successful product placement on television in 2007? Nope, it’s not Apple Computer, which would have been my first guess.

It’s actually Tyson Foods. They got the top nod from IAG Research after donating thousands of pounds of meat to a family on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Their brand-opinion index rating was 394. This score represented the most effective integration on TV in 2007. (I have no idea how they accurately measure something like that.)

Noggin and CourtTV go through some changes starting in the new yearWe’re just a scant five days and handful of hours away until the calendar page turns over and we’re in 2008. As usual, whenever a new year comes screaming and shouting out of womb of the old one changes abound. Nowhere does that seem more prevalent than in the world of television. Not only will we see a slew of mid-season premieres popping up as early as January 1st, but two cable networks will be changing as well.

The first change actually starts on New Year’s Eve. That is when Noggin and The N become two separate cable networks. Both networks will expand to a 24-hour schedule of programming, with Noggin remaining commercial-free and on its current channel position. The N, which is home to the very popular Degrassi: The Next Generation will be relocated to another channel. You will want to speak to your local cable company about its new location before you go through withdrawal.

EllenEllen DeGeneres just can’t stay away from controversy. Although she hasn’t done anything as ballsy as coming out (I guess you can’t do that twice, can you?), which fortunately didn’t tank her career, this year was a bang-up year for Ellen in the news. The first dog I’m referring to in the title is, in fact, a canine. Did anybody not hear about Ellen’s infamous dog story? Ellen adopted a dog from a dog bureau called Mutts and Mothers, and signed agreements at the time that if the adoption didn’t work out, she would return the dog to the agency. I presume Ms. DeGeneres has signed contracts before, but maybe this one didn’t count. Maybe this one didn’t seem binding. Or maybe she was just in a hurry that day, and didn’t actually read it. (MSNBC claims that DeGeneres didn’t read the contract, and that her partner Portia de Rossi signed).

Tom Kenny (SpongeBob) recites Twas the Night Before ChristmasI’m not one for the traditional holiday fare constantly repeated on TV at this time of year (although, I am a sucker for It’s A Wonderful Life, and regularly tear up at the very end. Damn you, Frank Capra!) That’s why I am very grateful for sites like YouTube, which provide me with an substitute to my holiday viewing. Because of that monster video web site I’m able to watch, over and over and over again, perhaps one of my most favorite holiday videos: Twas the Night Before Christmas recited by numerous voice actors.

Yes, I may enjoy this because I’m a voiceover wonk, but I just think it’s the coolest thing. Not only do you get to hear the story told by great voice actors like Jim Cummings, Gary Owens, Billy West, and Don LaFontaine, but you also get to match the voices you have heard on your television during a normal day with actual faces. In addition, you get to see some television actors — Nate Corddry and Dennis Haysbert, to name just two — doing their thing behind the microphone.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. You can view the video after the clip.

Doogie Axe

This just in from the department of obvious research: Viewers are more engaged with ads in online videos than traditional television commercials. A current study by Simmons indicates that viewers are 47% more engaged in commercials that run when watching TV shows on the internet than when you’re sitting in front of a TV.

We won’t get into what exactly constitutes “engagement,” but in a nutshell this is a marketing study that recommends advertisers will get some bang for their buck if they spend money to support online video.

I can think of plenty of reasons why people would be more receptive to on the web video ads. While most of us have learned to ignore the banner ads and pop ups that we see on web sites, there’s no way to ignore a 30 second interruption when you’re watching House. And unlike traditional TV, most of the services that let you watch Television shows online, whether they be network web pages, Hulu, Joost, or some other service, only include a handful of short commercials in each episode.

So while you might get up and go to the bathroom or kitchen during a 3 minute Television break, you don’t have time to walk around the house when a commercial comes on during your online video viewing session. Watching on the web videos also isn’t quite as passive an experience as Television for most viewers. You can’t just hit the power button and then start hitting the channel flip buttons mindlessly. You still need to actively seek out the programs you want to watch, which means there’s a better chance you’re paying attention in the first place.

Still, I suppose it’s nice to have a research company confirm something that should be obvious. Hopefully it will help convince networks to put more of their content libraries on the web.

gingerbread houseAs we approach Christmas Eve, and visions of new episodes of Heroes dance in your head, it’s time to give thanks for everything you have in your life. I know I’m thankful for family, friends, and this delicious chai I’m drinking right now, but I’m also thankful for hysterical web sites like LateShowWritersOnStrike.com, the blog that Letterman’s staff has been keeping since the strike started. And a few days ago they posted a strike-related crafts project you can make at home.

It’s the Gingerbread Network Headquarters!
