Knight Rider partyWell, here’s hoping that the powers that be were reading TV Squad after the two-hour Knight Rider motion picture premiered last February. Then, at least they’ll know how to repair the show, because NBC has picked up Knight Rider as a series for the 2008-2009 schedule, and it’s going to need some re-tooling.

That’s the phrase they love to use in the business to describe all the work that’s needed to turn a turkey — albeit one with great ratings — into a successful series. And Knight Rider, as conceived in that TV movie/back door pilot, needs some major work.

If you make a Cylon you can winSo, you’re sitting in front of your flat-screen, watching your Season Three DVD of Battlestar Galactica, in anticipation of the new season starting April 4th, and you happen to glance over at your 2-Slice stainless steel toaster. As you stare at your reflection in the gleaming metal you think ‘Hey, if I put some flashing lights on the face of that toaster it would look like a Cylon’s head. But, who in hell would be interested in seeing something like that other than myself?’

Funny you should think that, because someone is interested in seeing your creation. In fact, three someones in the form of Scifi.com, dvice.com, and Make magazine are willing to judge your work, along with others, to see who can mod or make a Cylon from scratch. If they like what you made they’ll give you a opportunity to show your creation on the SCI FI Channel.

And you thought putting blinking lights on your toaster was stupid, didn’t you?

Jason Bateman is returning to FOX to direct a comedy pilotHollywood people are strange folk. In the normal world people who are sacked by the company they worked for wouldn’t normally return to it in another capacity, especially if they were treated poorly during their employment. Yet, for some reason, when actors are let go from a network because of a show cancellation they tend to go back for more punishment.

Take Jason Bateman as an example. After his critically-acclaimed and fan-favorite comedy Arrested Development was unceremoniously canceled by FOX in 2006 you would think that he wouldn’t step anywhere near the network. In fact, you would think that he would jump to another network and make it big just to rub it in FOX’s face. Yet, there is news that he is directing a comedy pilot for them. Go figure.

Jack KlugmanThis is a very odd story, and not because it involves one-half of TV’s most enjoyable sitcoms ever, The Odd Couple, but it’s not about that show. It’s about his other successful series. Jack Klugman has filed suit against NBC Universal over profits from Quincy, M.E. The oddity is that the show hasn’t been in production for 25 years and this hasn’t come up till now!

abcThere was more pilot news percolating out of ABC yesterday, including three dramas and a sitcom. On the funny side, writer/producers Jennifer Konner and Alexandra Rushfield are working on Bad Mother’s Handbook. It follows the life of a busy, thirtysomething mother dealing with the needs/wants/desires of her teenaged daughter and 48-year old mother. Hmm, sounds like a close knit family! You think they’re all under one roof? The sitcom will be a single-camera affair, half-hour laugh fest (or so we hope). I vote for Jamie Lee Curtis as the 48-year old mom. She has the ability to still play 48; yes, she has the ability to. She looks great on those yogurt commercials!
