Didn’t think so. According to Reuters, NBC (they’re airing Super Bowl XLIII in Jan. ‘09) is expected to announce that the starting rate for a 30-second spot during the huge game will be $3 million. Wow. That factors out to a hundred grand per second. Last year’s going rate was a mere $2.7 million. While I’m sure this comes as no surprise (I mean, c’mon - the rates jump each year, don’t they?) to the big companies known for their Super Bowl commercials (think Budweiser, Coke, Pepsi, Fed Ex, etc.), it still makes you wonder how some of these smaller random companies can afford it. Each year there’s some new World wide web start-up you’ve never heard of and they’ll end up having one of the most talked about commercials - like GoDaddy.com from a few years ago. It just seems like a real gamble. Rather than put all of your footballs in one field (eggs in a basket, get it?), I would think that spreading your money over numerous smaller ad campaigns would make more sense.

Life on Mars was a terrific show. The UK version has played on BBC America, starring John Simm and Philip Glenister. Following the British model, the series lasted just two years — 16 episodes total. In the ABC pilot, which Thomas Schlamme directed, Jason O’Mara (Men in Trees) is playing Simm’s role, Sam; Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is Gene. Kelley wrote the American variation on the story of Sam Tyler, a police detective in present day who awakens from a vehicle crash to find he’s living in 1973. It looks like there has been yet another step in the independent motion picture industry going corporate as
Ever since Season Three, I’ve been feeling a bit nervous about Project Runway. I didn’t feel as strongly about the talent and I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated with the decisions and challenges in each episode. Of course, like any other lover of arty Television and sucker for punishment, I kept watching and even made it all the way through the travesty known as Season Four.
When a series is successful, it’s not surprising that there are speaks of spin-offs. In the last few years, we had spin-offs for Grey’s Anatomy, Girlfriends, CSI, Law & Order, etc., while others are in the works for Battlestar Galactica and Beverly Hills, 90210.
Invented a new product that you’d like to pitch to millions of sports fans? Think you could pack all your thoughts into one second? Got a hundred thousand dollars kicking around?
I don’t know if this is good news or bad…
