Here are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.
It will be interesting to see what the top shows are next week, since American Idol and Dancing with the Stars both had their season finales last week. And a lot of the scripted shows had their season finales too. I’m sure So You Think You Can Dance, at number 19 this week, will soar up in the ratings as spaces open up.
Hell’s Kitchen completed a tiny higher than usual, and Unsightly Betty a lot higher than usual.
1. American Idol - Weds (FOX) 2. American Idol - Tues (FOX)

After more than twenty years at 20th Century Fox TV, Emmy-winning writer-producer David E. Kelley is packing his bags.
One of the longest and most succesful collaborations in television history is coming to an end as Kelley announced that he’s entering into a three-year partnership with Warner Bros. Television.

In an attempt to avoid a situation like the industry-wide mess that was the writers’ strike, the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have reached a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The tentative deal was completed on Wednesday and capped 17 days of negotiation.
Mind you, this is only half the battle for the AMPTP. They still have to reach a deal with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) before their contract expires. Both the SAG and AFTRA contracts are set to expire on June 30th.

If you watched the network morning shows this morning, you’ve seen the shocking sight of the Big Three evening news anchors — Brian Williams, Katie Couric, and Charlie Gibson — appearing on each show … together! Gasp! How can that happen? Don’t the networks have contract clauses and armies of lawyers to prevent these things from happening?
Well, I guess the lawyers tend to stay home when a good cause is involved. The anchors went on the news shows this morning to announce a cross-network telethon called Stand Up for Cancer, which will air on NBC, CBS, and ABC on September 5. The one-hour show will have musical performances and testimonials from all three anchors about the need for furthering cancer research (remember Couric’s husband and sister both died from various forms of the disease). Money raised by the telethon will go to a number of organizations and research groups.

Your scary thought of the day comes from this Reuters article. When speaking about how many reality shows are now facing pressure to cut budgets and shoot shows faster they drop this bomb in, “The rapid pace can affect a show’s quality…” Great! Because what the TV world really needs right now is some lower quality reality programming. I get Fox Reality. Based on some of what I’ve seen while flipping by there, I really thought the bottom of that barrel had been discovered.
As part of the discussion they cite the rise in studio based reality, highlighting Fox’s Moment Of Truth. They also throw out that crappy stat that it was the highest-rated new program of the season. Is there anyone, anywhere, including the producers of Moment Of Truth, that doesn’t think that was entirely to do with American Idol? I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that when the Tuesday ratings are in they bring with them a karmic Nielsen slap that puts that show in its proper place.

Verizon Communications is hoping to have its FiOS Television service available to customers in New York City within the next two months. This would be a tremendous boon to those who subscribe to cable, as suddenly the choice for providers will increase from solely Time Warner.
From the article: “Verizon spokesman John Bonomo stated the city’s Franchise and Concession Review Committee had given the green light to the video service, which is delivered along with high-speed World wide web over an all-fiber network and is meant to compete with cable TV.”

It’s not exactly Live Nude Girls!, but close, no? Women In Chains!, for our purposes here, serves as the title of a new show described as a violent drama set at a women’s prison that Robert Rodriguez is now shopping around. If you’re thinking, “Wait, isn’t HBO doing a women’s prison series?” you would be correct. But if we have the ability to have two shows about bikers, there has to be room for two shows about women’s prisons.
The show, written by Josh Miller and Mark Fortin, will star Rodriguez’s fiancee, Rose McGowan. She’ll play one of five women central to the show. It’s rumored to have a 70s exploitation feel, and there’s talk of mud wrestling. Alan Ball’s Bad Girls most likely takes HBO out of the equation, but I’d certainly prefer Showtime over any of the normal networks, just for the freedom it would provide. The linked article mentions NBC and FX as receiving the spec script. Should it end up at either of those, it will be interesting to see how what looks to be an envelope pushing show plays out under the tighter restrictions.
[Thanks to J for the tip.]

I’ve to admit, this made me chuckle.
You know how you latch on to a show that gets so-so ratings (Arrested Development, Jericho, Moonlight, etc.) and then the show is canceled and you’re forced to scramble fans together to send nuts or whatever to the network to demonstrate how much you want the show to stick around? Well, why wait until the show is canceled to do that? In fact, why wait until the show even premieres?
Fans of the new FOX/Joss Whedon show Dollhouse (can you be a “fan” if the show hasn’t debuted yet?) have already started a “Save Our Show” campaign, because they fear that FOX will cancel the show swiftly, like they did another Whedon show, Firefly.
