There are a lot of the usual suspects on the list, of course (though that doesn’t mean they’re not worthy - they are), including 30 Rock, The Office, Friday Night Lights, and The Wire. It’s also great to see Mad Men get so many nominations, including Program of the Year, Best Drama, Best New Show, and a Ideal Individual Achievement nom for star Jon Hamm. It’s interesting to see that Mad Men will go up against another AMC show, Breaking Bad, in the Best New Show category. Lost is well represented, as are John Adams, Flight of the Conchords, and PBS’ The War miniseries. As for The Wire, it’s not only up for drama and acting awards, it has also been nominated for the Heritage Award, along with M*A*S*H, Saturday Night Live, Sesame Street, and Roots. Interesting to see such a current show up for a lifetime award next to classics. The awards will be presented on July 19. Anything missing from these nominations? I’m pretty sure neither role will be as funny as Hale’s turn as Buster, the hook-handed soldier / mama’s boy that was always one of my favorite AD characters. But, hey, an actor’s gotta work, and Hale picked two pretty good shows to work on. By the way, right at the top of Hale’s IMDb profile are some of the sweetest words I’ve read all month: “Arrested Development (2009) (announced) …. Byron ‘Buster’ Bluth” [via Pop Candy]

Going through the list, we start with Birds of Prey. The first mistake they made (and there was a myriad of them) was altering Batman’s daughter to have superpowers. I guess the WB was trying to copy the success of Smallville into other superhero shows and failing. I remember seeing one episode of Once A Hero. I’m only sorry they didn’t air the episode in which Adam West parodied himself. I missed Exo Man altogether (but only in the sense that I didn’t watch it). Exactly what that influence will be is one of the many questions left up in the air after the guarded announcement. The only real details that were given up about the setting and direction of the show are that it is set 80 to 100 years in the future and Earth looks very different. It’s not a lot to go on, but it’s understandable why they are excited about it. Reading through the quotes from those involved you see things like Sci Fi president Dave Howe saying, “This is the Holy Grail for us, without a doubt.” So, if you had Aztec Rex in the Sci Fi Holy Grail pool, you were wrong. |
