TidalTV

TidalTV is a web-based video service. But it doesn’t look anything like YouTube, Joost, or even Hulu. If anything, it looks like the service you get from your cable or satellite provider.

The TidalTV display is laid out like an electronic program guide with a video window in the corner. You can click on the video to bring up a full screen version. Or you can click on the program guide to flip channels. There’s also an on-demand section if you don’t want to watch the scheduled programming stream.

Justine BatemanGive Justine Bateman credit: She could have been typecast after playing the dippy, fashion-obsessed Mallory Keaton on Family Ties, but she’s been able to build a nice career for herself over the last twenty years by playing interesting supporting roles in movies like The Television Set and series like Desperate Housewives. But she’s also been — just like 75% of the people in Hollywood — an aspiring writer, struggling to get her scripts produced (and you think having connections helps … she knows Michael J. Fox and her brother is Jason Bateman, and she still couldn’t get her scripts produced).

But now she can add “sitcom writer” to her credits; she just wrote an episode of The Disney Channel’s hit Wizards of Waverly Place, according to the New York Daily News. Apparently, she’s a friend of executive producer Peter Murrieta, and she got to know some of the show’s writers during the writers’ strike. So, when the strike ended, she was invited to write an episode for the show.

Here are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

While ABC is probably happy with the NBA Finals games (predictably) grabbing the top slots, CBS has to be happy with the way two of their new shows fared. Million Dollar Password was number 6 this week (number three last week) and the debut of Swingtown hit number 12. Actually, CBS has to be happy in general, as they grabbed 13 of the top 20 shows, though I’m kinda surprised that 60 Minutes continues to do so well in the off season, considering the episodes are all repeat segments.

1. NBA Finals - Game 1 (ABC)
2. NBA Finals - Game 2 (ABC)

AmesHmmm … this sounds like a rather interesting premise, actually: HBO has just given the green light to a new comedy pilot titled Bored To Death, about a Brooklyn writer who is so bored that he decides to become a real life private eye like the hero in his favorite Raymond Chandler novels.

Hey, if we can’t have Marlowe, I’ll take this.

The script is being written by Jonathan Ames, former columnist at The New York Press and author of the books The Extra Man, I Pass Like Night, I Love You More Than You Know, My Less Than Secret Life, Wake Up Sir! and What’s Not To Love? Ames has also been a boxer and has appeared several times on The Late Show with David Letterman. He’s also working on a graphic novel called The Alcoholic, which sounds like a rather great idea for a graphic novel. He’ll also be executive producer on the project.
