MTV has decided that after a ten-year absence from the west coast, the Video Music Awards will be held this year in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be held on Sunday September 7th at the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood.

What? No Kodak Theatre? No Nokia Theatre? So, why the choice to hold the ceremony at a Hollywood studio lot? Entertainment Weekly says, “Expect executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic to make use of many of Paramount’s stages, rooftops, and camera-ready city streets for the star-studded show, which will only air once in its original incarnation.”

I Was Told There'd Be CakeLike everyone else who has read Sloane Crosley’s book of essays I Was Told There’d Be Cake (side note: “there’d” has got to be one of the weirdest words in the world to type and look at), I loved it. She’s been compared to David Sedaris, but that comparison is actually accurate. Also like most men who read the book, I have a little bit of a crush on her. I think HBO does too.

The cable network has purchased the rights to Cake in the hopes of making a series out of it. There are very few details being released about the possible series, but since Crosley states that the show is going to be more like Curb Your Enthusiasm than Sex and the City, I feel safe in putting this in the “other comedy” category and not “other drama” or “sci-fi.”

Crosley is also a publicist at Vintage Books. Cake is a New York Times Bestseller.

Camp Rock I know you’ve all been wondering if the Jonas Brothers squash the machine that’s Zac Efron. Well, they can … kind of. Camp Rock averaged 8.9 million viewers on Friday night. That’s more viewers than High School Musical, which had 7.8 million for its debut. However, 8.9 million pales in comparison to last summer’s 17.2 million (ZOMG!) viewers for High School Musical 2. And it proves that the Efron is unstoppable and more bankable. In fact, High School Musical 2 is the most watched non-sports program on cable.

Joal Ryan of E! On the internet points out that Camp Rock could still beat High School Musical overall, “The Jonas Brothers are far larger stars than Efron or any of his costars were in January 2006, when the first HSM premiered.” He goes to state that the real test of Camp Rock will be if it has the ability to rule the ratings in the inevitable many, many reruns.

Men in TreesApparently, ABC has posted the wrong season finale of Men in Trees on their site. The show had filmed two endings: one in case it was renewed and one in case it was canceled. On deciding which ending to use a few months back, executive producer Jenny Bicks stated, “One is a tiny more of a cliffhanger. It might also depend on how we want to end the season regardless. They’re both very effective endings.”

Rob Owen of TV Q&A at the Post Gazette discovered that ABC had posted the “we’re not canceled” cliffhanger ending on the web by mistake earlier this week. One of his readers asked, “Much to my surprise the episode on the Internet had a different ending than what was shown on Television. It ended with Jack’s ex-girlfriend, Lynn, leaving their baby girl on the doorstep of Marin’s home and driving off.”

Owen confirmed that ABC had indeed posted the wrong ending online for a short time. He also anticipates that Warner Bros. will save both endings for a DVD release.

Tom BrokawThere’s been speculation about who will replace Tim Russert on NBC’s Meet the Press. David Gregory, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and Katie Couric were a few of the rumored possibilites. Jovie Baclayon of E! On the web reports that Tom Brokaw will be temporarily replacing the tragically-lost news anchor. NBC announced today that the former Nightly News anchor and South Dakota native would take over moderating responsiblities on Sunday mornings. He’ll guide discussions through the November presidential elections.

Steve Capus, NBC News President, made this statement about Brokaw’s decision to step in: “To have someone of Tom’s stature step up and dedicate himself to ensuring its ongoing success is not only a testament to his loyalty to Tim, but his enduring commitment to NBC News and our viewers.”

After 21 years helming the program, Tom Brokaw retired from NBC Nightly News in 2004.

Tim Russert died of a heart attack last week on June 13th. He was 58.
