Britney Spears at the MTV VMA AwardsDespite being panned for her performance at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, it seems that MTV wants her back. the president of MTV Music Networks Van Toffler has been quoted as saying “Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?”

Spears “Gimme More” performance at last year’s awards at the Palms Casino Resort drew 7.1 million viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. It was the show’s most talked-about moment.

This year’s VMA’s will take place at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on September 7th. The show’s performances will occur on the lot’s various sound stages, rooftops and faux city streets.

Honestly, doesn’t Britney have enough money? Shouldn’t she concentrate more on attempting to see her kids? She looked pretty out of it during the last show (which is probably the source of all the gossip) and it’s time for her to take a long break. Unless, of course, she’s being prepared for the harvest.

Romany MalcoFormer Weeds co-star Romany Malco is developing his own series and testing it out on YouTube viewers. Malco decided to create his own character after his Weeds role was written out of the show. He’s leaving Conrad Shepard behind and moving on to the role of Tijuana “T.J.” Jackson.

Malco described Tijuana Jackson as an ex-convict living under house arrest. Under a strange, “only on TV” legal arrangement, T.J. stays out of jail by supporting the three women that live with him. The women also happen to be prostitutes and T.J.’s employees.

MTV logoI’m one of the many people who laments the “channel drift” that has affected MTV. A network that started out as, well, “music television” has clearly become “anything but music TV.” There’s even a graph now on GraphJam the depicts how The Real World caused the downfall of MTV. The graph shows how the airtime for music videos has decreased as The Real World grew in popularity. Perhaps it should also measure how the cast of The Real World became more attractive and subsequently less intelligent.

The graph posits that by 2010 music videos will be nonexistent on the channel. Also, interesting is the rise of what the graph calls simply “other crap” that coincides with the rise of shows like The Real World and Road Rules. I assume “other crap” refers to shows like The Hills, My Super Sweet Sixteen, and Made — shows that have replaced music videos in primetime (and replaced music videos with their incessant reruns in daytime).

Interesting piece over at Nikki Finke’s site. While everyone is concentrating on a possible actors strike (the deadline is Monday for SAG to make an agreement), there’s another tiny controversy going on. The Writers Guild of America West has asked the FCC to look into the ever-increasing habit of product integration in network shows. Not only does the WGA want to see the use of products on television eased up, which the FCC is already looking into, they also want to go one step further and make viewers fully aware that they are seeing an ad.

And how would the networks do that?
