Romany MalcoFormer Weeds co-star Romany Malco is developing his own series and testing it out on YouTube viewers. Malco decided to create his own character after his Weeds role was written out of the show. He’s leaving Conrad Shepard behind and moving on to the role of Tijuana “T.J.” Jackson.

Malco described Tijuana Jackson as an ex-convict living under house arrest. Under a strange, “only on TV” legal arrangement, T.J. stays out of jail by supporting the three women that live with him. The women also happen to be prostitutes and T.J.’s employees.

MTV logoI’m one of the many people who laments the “channel drift” that has affected MTV. A network that started out as, well, “music television” has clearly become “anything but music TV.” There’s even a graph now on GraphJam the depicts how The Real World caused the downfall of MTV. The graph shows how the airtime for music videos has decreased as The Real World grew in popularity. Perhaps it should also measure how the cast of The Real World became more attractive and subsequently less intelligent.

The graph posits that by 2010 music videos will be nonexistent on the channel. Also, interesting is the rise of what the graph calls simply “other crap” that coincides with the rise of shows like The Real World and Road Rules. I assume “other crap” refers to shows like The Hills, My Super Sweet Sixteen, and Made — shows that have replaced music videos in primetime (and replaced music videos with their incessant reruns in daytime).

Interesting piece over at Nikki Finke’s site. While everyone is concentrating on a possible actors strike (the deadline is Monday for SAG to make an agreement), there’s another tiny controversy going on. The Writers Guild of America West has asked the FCC to look into the ever-increasing habit of product integration in network shows. Not only does the WGA want to see the use of products on television eased up, which the FCC is already looking into, they also want to go one step further and make viewers fully aware that they are seeing an ad.

And how would the networks do that?

LenoYou know how people say stuff like “if CBS cancels Moonlight, I’m never watching that stupid network again!”? I think those proclamations are usually silly, but I might be in that group if the following happens: CBS replacing David Letterman with Jay Leno.

That’s one of the options listed in this handy Hollywood Reporter guide to what Leno will do after his stint on NBC is over in 2009. The other options are going to ABC at 11:35, going to FOX at 11:35, a syndicated show with Sony, he stays at NBC and does some other primetime show, he takes over for Larry King on CNN, or he goes back to doing standup full-time. Taking over for Letterman would happen if (and when - he could extend his contract) Letterman retires in 2010.

Yes, it's a real thing. No, really, it is.As an intro to my article about The New York Reality Television School, I’ve asked Red from The Shawshank Redemption to narrate my opening paragraph:

I wish I could tell you that the New York Reality TV School fought the good fight, and that the students in attendance were not a collection of mostly desperate people whose desire for fame burned more strongly than their sense of dignity. I wish I could tell you that, but the entertainment industry is no fairy-tale world.

Thanks Red. Now, if you, the reader, would be so kind as to click through to the article, it would mean a lot to me. Not because I get paid more for click-throughs (I don’t; AOL pays me a flat rate of 60 cents plus a pound of corn husks for every post I make, regardless of the number of clicks), but because I spent three hours attending the inaugural class of the NYRTV school last Saturday. I just couldn’t take it if the end result of that’s an article no one reads…
