The CloserHere are the weekly cable ratings, by number of viewers.

While I’m really, really happy that Burn Notice grabbed the #6 slot this week, I’m a tiny bummed out that Mad Men didn’t make the top 10. In fact, it didn’t even make it in anywhere near the top 10, despite getting two million viewers for its season premiere. Still, that’s superior than the ratings for last season.

1. The Closer (TNT)
2. NASCAR Sprint Cup (ESPN)
3. Saving Grace (TNT)
4. Monk (USA)
5. Hannah & Miley (Disney)
6. Burn Notice (USA)
7. Monday Night RAW (USA)
8. Law and Order: CI (USA)
9. Yankees vs. Red Sox (ESPN)
10. In Plain Sight (USA)

Chuck LorreWhen I was speaking to Carter Bays and Craig Thomas at CBS’ TCA party, they told me about how another reporter mentioned that Chuck Lorre, creator of Two and a Half Men and The Huge Bang Theory, is also known for writing and performing the theme song for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. None of us could believe it, and we were intent on spreading this tiny rumor to whoever we could find. But, in my role as “tenacious entertainment reporter,” I wanted to find out from the man himself. So when I spotted Lorre later on in the evening, I made a beeline for him and asked him. When he confirmed the rumor, I whipped out my voice recorder, dumbfounded at the news.

“I was a musician for 17 years before I got into TV,” said Lorre. “I was just a working musician, and I was trying to get a break as a songwriter. And back in the ’80s I got a shot to write the music for this six episode trial run of this weird little animated thing, based on a garage comic. You know, a black-and-white tiny comic book. And we stated ‘Absolutely! We’d love to! We’ll take any shot.’ “

Streets of San FranciscoThere was a time I was absolutely obsessed with The Streets of San Francisco. I never really watched it when it was on ABC in prime time, except for an episode here and there, but I used to watch it each day in the afternoon after school when a local station aired repeats. It was one of the highlights of the day for a while. It’s one of those solid 70s shows with a good cast and some interesting guest stars (Arnold Schwarzenegger as a weight lifter who kills people when they make fun of his size!).

CBS is going to remake the show, and I can only envision it’s going to be CSI: San Francisco. The beauty of these old shows was the cast, so I don’t know what you get by just taking the title and putting new actors in there. Hopefully they’ll keep the old theme song, and resist the urge to add rap lyrics to it.

mark mcgrath mario lopezWho’s ready for a Sugar Ray reunion? Anybody? Hello?

Well, ready or not, you’re going to get one. Mark McGrath, the Sugar Ray frontman-turned-entertainment-reporter is leaving Extra. Some reports state he’s been fired, but The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that he really just wanted to get back to the band.

McGrath has been on hiatus from Sugar Ray for the past three years as he hosted Extra, but now the band is heading back to the studio and Mario Lopez is stepping up to take his spot behind the anchor desk. Lopez’s much lauded muscles are apparently too big to share the stage, though. McGrath’s co-host, Dayna Devon, has been demoted to Special Correspondent and backup host for Lopez.

I will always look at Lopez as A.C. Slater, so the idea of him becoming a “journalist” kind of makes me laugh. But then again, it’s not like Mark McGrath was exactly the second coming of Cronkite. Besides, anyone who could stand 6 inches away from Miss Teen South Carolina as she rambled on about “The Iraq” without completely losing it obviously has some talent.

So You Think You Can Dance
Here are the weekly Television ratings, by number of viewers.

Anyone else sick of the summer? These are, as the cliche goes, the dog days. I’m sick of seeing America’s Got Talent in the top slot, all of the CBS cop shows (repeats, no less), and reality/game shows. Flashpoint got in the top 20 again on its new Thursday night at 10pm slot.

1. America’s Got Talent (NBC)
2. Wipeout (ABC)
3. Two and a Half Men (CBS)
