This is a rather confusing story. Or maybe all of this heat is getting to me and there’s obvious point here I’m missing.
Nielsen Media surveyed 82,000 18-49 year-olds (a rather hefty sample), and 75% of the respondents state that Bravo is the most engaging network. Yup, the network of reality shows (is there anything else on the network these days?) holds the attention of that key demographic more than any other channel, network or cable, including runner-up CBS (which got 74%), ABC (73%), The CW (71%), NBC (70%), and FOX (69%).

ESPN Films is co-producing a film for theatrical release about legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey. The film will center around their struggle to break down racial barriers in the late 40s. The project, which is yet untitled, will be produced by Robert Redford, Tracy Falco, Karen Baldwin and Andrew Cohen. Redford will star in the role of Rickey. No word on who will play Robinson.
ESPN Senior VP, Ron Semiao, says “ESPN Films is honored to be collaborating with such accomplished storytellers and filmmakers for such an important sports and American story.” Semiao was at the Beverly Hilton yesterday along with Branch Rickey III to discuss the project. Semiao added that doing this theatrical film was a natural extension for the company which tries to serve sports fans “however they consume sports content.”

With the WGA Strike as ancient history, the guild is now pushing to have reality shows join its organization. In an effort to do this, the WGA is specifically targeting the show American Idol.
They’re calling it the Truth Tour and it begins with a Wednesday morning press conference in front of WGA headquarters following by a set of fake auditions at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, where auditions are held for the actual American Idol. They call it “the version they don’t want you to see”.

Every season I get sucked into watching Nashville Star by the simple fact that I love cover songs. From the truly great ones like Hendrix doing “All Along The Watchtower” or Soundgarden’s astounding spin on Black Sabbath’s “Into The Void,” right on through to the absurdly obscure, like Shakira playing “Back In Black,” they’re all good. For me, Nashville Star is just a big weekly collection of odd covers.
It’s with that thought process that I was tuned in again this week, when something caught my ear. Ashlee Hewitt’s (pictured) first performance was the classic Steve Miller Band tune, “Take The Money And Run.” There was one odd little exception though. Your years of classic rock radio should have taught you that Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue were “two young lovers with nothing better to do, than sit around the home, get high, and watch the tube.” Suddenly this week, they changed to “two young lovers, with nothing superior to do, than sit around the house, sit around, and watch the tube.” That just isn’t right. See for yourself, after the jump.

It’s a good time to be AMC. There is no shortage of praise for their period drama, Mad Men, or for the quirky Breaking Bad. They’re not relaxing on their laurels though, as evidenced by the announcement of two more pilot projects. First up is the series adaptation of the David Gold novel, Carter Beats The Devil.
It’s the story of a 1920s magician that becomes implicated in the death of President Harding. Given the current track record with Mad Men, the idea of a story set in the 20s, and involving the world of magic, certainly seems to have a lot of potential. The book was previously being developed as a feature film, with Tom Cruise rumored to be involved. The script is by Wesley Strick (Cape Fear, The Saint) and will be produced by John Baldecchi and Rich Silverman (The Mexican).
The other new project for the network is Ice. It’s set in the hazardous world of New York diamond merchants and stated to be a family drama. The pilot was written by Christian Darren (Hustle: The Pete Rose Story) and will be directed by Vadim Perelman (Home Of Sand And Fog). Both projects are too late for AMC’s 2008 pilot season, but will be part of the 2009 plan.
