Jimmy Kimmel asking Steve McPherson about LenoA funny thing happened at the beginning of the ABC executive session this morning. After ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson got on stage, stated some opening remarks, and opened the floor to questions, someone got up and identified himself as Tom Weinerman of the Sarasota Star-Herald Tribune. That was a bit uncommon, as the reporters here never identify themselves before asking questions.

But then, people started recognizing the voice, or turned in the direction of the questioner, and realized what was going on: It was Jimmy Kimmel, and he’d some pointed — and funny — questions for McPherson about the possibility of Jay Leno coming to ABC.

WipeoutHere are the weekly Television ratings, by number of viewers.

Doing the ratings during the summer is rather boring. America’s Got Talent and Wipeout are on top again, and the rest of it is the usual mix of other reality shows and game shows and the CBS lineup of crime crime crime, which even gets huge ratings when they’re repeated, for some reason. Even the newest crime drama Flashpoint grabbed the #15 slot with its premiere, and it’s on Friday nights.

1. America’s Got Talent (NBC)
2. Wipeout (ABC)

Amy PoehlerAccording to popular rumor, SNL star Amy Poehler is in talks to star in the spin-off series from NBC’s The Office. If this is true, she’ll be joining fellow SNL alumnus (and former Weekend Update co-anchor and co-star of the motion picture Baby Mama) Tina Fey as part of NBC’s comedy prime-time line-up. No word yet on how Poehler’s real-life pregnancy would affect this situation.

All I can state is: wow, what a fantastic choice. I’ve always been impressed with Poehler’s work since she co-founded the Upright Citizen’s Brigade (which is still going strong on both coasts). I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her perform comedy improv a few times and noticed how she’s leaps and bounds more talented than most of the other people on the stage.

If anybody can lead a sitcom, it’s Amy Poehler. If this news is true, I very much look forward to this spin-off and think it may be one of those rare cases in which the spin-off equals or is even greater than the original.

Saturday will be just as busy as Friday at the San Diego Comic-ConSaturday — a time of rest and relaxation. A time to put your feet up, grab a lemonade, open a book, and let the cool, summer breezes gently rock your hammock as a lazy July day passes. Of course, that’s if you aren’t attending the San Diego Comic-Con. Then, it’s out of your bed, quick shower (if any), breakfast-on-the-go, and right back into the queues to see your particular favorites speaking about their television shows.

Like Friday, Saturday at Comic-Con will be packed with TV goodness. This is the day that many of the huge guns come to play. Shows like The Office, Lost, Battlestar Galactica will be making appearances. They’ll be joined by newcomers Chuck, Dollhouse, and Pushing Daisies. There will even be an appearance by the recently single Sarah Silverman. There’s also a good bit of TV animation being featured, particularly by Nicktoons and B.E.T. Animation.

In order to make sure you get the most out of the money you paid to get into the convention, we here at TV Squad are providing you with a complete list of television-related panels for that day. If you’re interested in seeing what else is going on July 25th you can review the official full schedule at the Comic-Con website. Remember, times and appearances are subject to change and seating in all event rooms is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Shield panel
The FX panels on Tuesday were pretty uneventful, aside from the news from network president John Landgraf. There was supposed to be a panel for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but that was mysteriously dropped from the schedule. I’m guessing that the boys figured they’d get too hammered at the FOX celebration the night before to handle questions from the reporters. Indeed, I witnessed Rob McElhenny and Glenn Howerton try to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl at the Santa Monica pier right after they pounded a couple of beers. Maybe canceling the panel was a smart idea.

Anyway, the three shows that paneled were Damages, Sons of Anarchy, and The Shield. More on what transpired after the jump.

The Mole logoAnother week, another petition to save a show.

Producers of ABC’s spy reality series The Mole have created a web site to save the ratings-challenged show — Save The Mole. Right now the site consists of an open letter to fans from Scott Stone and Clay Newbill, the producers of the show.

They say that while a lot of critics agree that the show is one of the smarter reality shows, it’s not doing well in that all-important 18 to 49 demographic. Those specific ratings are stale, but there’s still time to save the show. They want hardcore fans to get other friends to watch the show, post on the ABC message boards, and go to the Mole Facebook page. They also announce that FOX Reality Channel will have a marathon of the current season this Sunday at 11 AM.

The site is very low-tech. Just black text on a white background with a couple of images. It’s rather 1997-ish, but I actually care about it.

William Petersen CSIJust because William Petersen signed a contract in Might that stated he was going to stay on CSI, doesn’t mean that he’s going to, you know, stay on CSI. As it turns out, Petersen, who does double-duty as Gil Grissom and executive producer of the long-running procedural, had a clause in his contract that’s allowing him to leave the show after this season’s tenth episode. Both Petersen and CBS are swift to point out, however, that we will not be seeing the last of Gil Grissom.

Petersen plans to remain actively involved in CSI and is maintaining his role as executive producer. Even though he’ll no longer be a series regular, he’s definitely not planning on leaving for good, saying, “I’m in a great place in terms of knowing that I’ll be more free to make choices. And I’m responsible enough to not do it in a way that would hurt [the show].”

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP

Sarah Connor Chronicles panel
After the mid-day lunch/writing break, FOX jam-packed events into the rest of the afternoon and evening, not leaving much time to breathe, much less stop and type a blog post. One of the more noteworthy sessions after the break was for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Note that I said “noteworthy,” not “interesting.” Why? Because not much in the way of news came out of it. Still, a few things were thrown out by the producers and stars that may pique a fan’s interest.

First of all: The show will have more self-contained episodes this year. Why? Executive producer John Wirth had a very succinct answer to that: “Because we wanted to.”

What's going on Friday at Comic-Con? Take a look here to find out.Okay, show of hands. How many of you are going to the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con to see all of the panels being held by the many TV studios and shows? Uh-huh, a good amount. Now, how many of you’re going to be perusing the booths and dealers down at the exhibit hall? Ahhh, not so fast!

If you’re a fan of all things television and you think you’ll have some time to see what else is going on during this, the world’s largest science fiction and comic book convention, you might want to re-think your plans. This isn’t your grandfather’s, father’s, or even older brother’s comic book convention.

Starting last year this convention has become the biggest television event between the TCA’s the week before (which we’re covering, by the way) and the Emmy’s at the end of the summer. This year is no exception as the days are packed with shows varying from Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica to Big Bang Theory and Bones.
