Taking a cue from ABC, NBC had Jay Leno pose as a reporter and ask NBC’s two-headed entertainment chief, Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff, about when Leno would be leaving and when Conan would be starting. Only, instead of just wearing a baseball cap like Kimmel did, Leno donned a bald cap and beard to make him seem extra stealthy.
Some of the “funny” lines are after the jump, but here’s the gist of the news: Leno’s last day on the Tonight show will be on May 29, with Conan O’Brien taking over the following Monday, June 1. Conan will do his last Late Night sometime during the first quarter, according to Graboff and Silverman, and Jimmy Fallon will take over the timeslot at an undetermined time during either March or April (that’s after starting on the internet, as Lorne Michaels announced yesterday). No word on what will play in Conan’s 12:30 slot in the interim period.

I remember watching the halftime show of the 2004 Super Bowl and seeing Janet Jackson’s nipple at the end of her duet with Justin Timberlake. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen and I knew it was going to be a large thing. Of course, no one knew at the time just how huge it was going to become. It actually changed the way TV shows are presented now.
But here’s some good news for logic: a federal appeals court has thrown out the $550,000 fine that the FCC gave CBS for broadcasting the football boob scene. In the ruling the court said the FCC acted “arbitrarily and capriciously” when they handed out the fine.

Ya know, around the time Friends was ending, I would have bet on big things for Jennifer Aniston. She’s certainly had her successes since then, with things like The Break-Up. But it really seems that she’s had far more press for her relationships, and her penchant for sunbathing topless, than she has for her acting. That may go a long way to explain the latest Aniston rumor.
It’s being reported that she has an idea for her production company, a movie where she plays the over-bearing mom to a rising star daughter. And she would like that daughter to be played by Miley Cyrus. It actually sounds like a good idea. From Television episodes, to concert tickets, now seems to be a pretty good time to be in the Miley Cyrus business. It should all be taken with a large grain of salt though, as the quote leading to the rumor, “I approached Miley about it, and she thinks it’s a very cool idea.” Is the Star, quoting a pal, quoting Aniston. Make of it what you will, but if there’s any truth to it, it’s an idea with some legs.

After I posted about what CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler stated about Moonlight the other day — namely that the campaign to save it was “actor-driven” instead of show-driven — angry comments came in from all the “loyal” fans of the show out there (I put the word “loyal” in quotes because Moonlight fans make the Jericho fans look cool and collected). Most of those fans stated that Tassler was a liar. One even went so far to attach the b-word to his invective. You’d have thought that Tassler drained these people’s 401(k)’s and skipped off to Central America.
Anyway, I caught up with Tassler at the CBS party that night, and I told her about the comments I was getting. When I speculated that I didn’t even think the Jericho fans were that passionate, she retorted, “I think they were. The Jericho fans … I spent a lot of time looking the blogs and the website. Look, I don’t want to say Moonlight fans weren’t fans of the show. They were. But in sort of sifting through all of it (the e-mails, etc.) it was very much about ‘our vampire, Alex (O’Laughlin).’” When I mentioned that some of the comments were pretty unsightly, she just looked at me and said, “It’s not a pretty business.”

NBC and its various cable stations are making their presentations this day and tomorrow. Since it is Sunday, the critics got a little bit of a break and didn’t have to start until noon, when a lunch session was held for Friday Night Lights. This session had a tiny bit of added juice, due to the very special deal NBC struck to have DirecTV shoulder the cost of producing the series in exchange for the rights to air new episodes on the satellite service first before they air on NBC. Thirteen episodes will be produced and will air in October on DirecTV’s 101 Network, and they’ll air in February on the Peacock network.
Not surprisingly, there were as many questions about the new arrangement as there were about the creative aspects of the show. Show-runner Jason Katims and DirecTV entertainment head Eric Shanks fielded most of those questions, and the cast of the show fielded the rest.
