You never heard John McCain or Barack Obama talking about this on the campaign trail.

A lot of people were surprised that The Sarah Connor Chronicles was renewed. Not because it’s a bad show or doesn’t deserve to grow and all that, but just because it wasn’t getting the best ratings (plus it’s on FOX). Now The Hollywood Reporter has a theory: the bad economy is helping these borderline shows.

The theory is that because of the bad economy, combined with the writers strike earlier this year and advertising dollars are down across the board, networks are renewing shows that wouldn’t ordinarily be renewed. Besides The Sarah Connor Chronicles, shows like Knight Rider have gotten orders for more episodes.

Chelsea HandlerChelsea Lately is the late night speak show that never gets any attention. That’s probably because it’s on E! and that’s probably a network that Television viewers don’t think about when they think of late night television, but let’s be honest, it’s a lot better than Last Call with Carson Daly (plus it’s on a lot earlier). And Chelsea Handler is a genuinely funny person. Her book of comic essays Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea is quite good, though I haven’t read her first book about all of the one night stands she has had. Sounds funny though. She was also on Girls Behaving Badly, but we can forgive her for that.

E! has been impressed with the ratings for Handler’s show and they’ve given it a green light through 2009.

logo cbsFor CBS, tradition and consistency are the keystones for success. So while CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves talked about a few new projects in an interview with TV Week, he also shared the news that the network will be booking more Survivor and The Astonishing Race editions in the seasons to come.

To this I say, hooray! Especially for The Extraordinary Race. There’s a reason this show has won the Emmy so many times. The current race has been terrific. Survivor seems to be having a bounce back season, as well.

I was turned off to the last couple of seasons — China was a drag — but I’m enjoying the current contest. Anytime an antagonist like Ace emerges, that’s good Television to me.
