This day, Valleywag has news that Google is testing the display of videos and products in the sidebar…

Now, where have we seen this before, I wonder?

Google Checkout, Google’s on the web payment system, is extending its free processing until February 1, 2008. The promotion was going to end on December 31, 2007. If you’re a Google Adwords customer for each dollar you spend on AdWords, you can process $10 of sales with Google Checkout for free. After that you’ll be charged 2.0% plus $0.20 per transaction no matter what credit card is used. There are no monthly, setup, or gateway fees.
You must link your AdWords account with Checkout to earn free transaction processing. If you add the link by February, 2008, your AdWords spend from January will count towards free processing in February.
Your Checkout and AdWords accounts must be based on the same currency in order to be linked. One nice feature of Checkout is that the fees, when they are charged, are straightforward. PayPal fees depend on your account type, your monthly sales, and whether the buyer is sending money from a bank account or credit card.
Google Checkout is gaining on Paypal when it comes to the top 200 largest on the internet merchants (barely).
Both Paypal and Google Checkout have holiday promotions running. Better hurry though, time is running out.

With this year wrapping up Google has compiled their most searched-on terms of the year. This is the online popularity contest as well as good information about what’s on people’s minds, available to you through Google Zeitgeist.
This is valuable information if you’re a marketer. Say you own an on the web dating site, you know that people want to know how to kiss (see below) or what love is. Your articles and newsletters could live on those topics for some time. It’s also valuable if you’re curious like I’m.
Let’s begin with the ideal first, and that to me is the philosophical questions we try to answer with Google. The number one question of the year is “who is God,” and some would answer: Google of course! The most commonly googled what and how questions are: what is love and how to kiss.
Of course politics has been on our mind too (I’d like to know how politics compares to our celebrity searches) and here’s a handy chart that shows just how much Ron Paul has come onto the scene. He went from almost dead last to the top by a long shot. It looks like Republicans aren’t fairing as well as Democrats - at least for Google users.

What about news? It’s not so intellectual - we want to know about celebrities. This, unlike most of the rest is on a global scale. I’m not sure how much of Google News traffic is international, but here’s the list:
Google News Most Popular Searches (global)
- american idol
- youtube
- britney spears
- 2007 cricket world cup
- chris benoit
- iphone
- anna nicole smith
- paris hilton
- iran
- vanessa hudgens
And now for a smattering of top search terms: TV show: heroes Movie: transformers Politician: ron paul Ringtone: mosquito rington Diet: weight watchers Recipe: master sanitize recipe Fitness: pilates, followed by bikram yoga (which is incredible because it’s so specific)
As far as game consoles go the number of searches keeps rising as it gets closer to Christmas. The wii has gained a lot of popularity during October and November due to scarcity.

As far as Yahoo - I didn’t find a complete list but the #1 search term was Britney Spears. Lycos users sought less celebrity and more substantial news stories, like the top news search: Saddam Hussein Execution. Still looking for the MSN list…

Oh, OpenSocial. How utopian. How idealistic. How run-by-Google.
How not actually what Bebo decided to go with for their Open Application Platform, announced this day (CNET coverage), despite having joined the initiative last month. Instead, their platform is set to be Facebook-compatible, making it simple for developers to port their Facebook apps to Bebo. Which, you know, they’re all just dying to do.
Bebo is among the first to be able to use Facebook’s markup language (FBML) externally, a capability which Facebook just announced.
So, why the betrayal? Bebo CEO (and co-founder) Michael Birch made his announcement this morning, he explained:
When OpenSocial (which has yet to launch in full) is ready and stable, Birch said, Bebo will add those APIs to its developer arsenal, too. “OpenSocial and the Facebook Platform are clearly different platforms,” he said, then added jokingly, “Our lazy development team stated they couldn’t do both at once.”
I wonder if he was joking when he informed the assembled reporters that “There’s a tiny bit of a land grab with social networks.” (To which the assembled reporters said, “What?! Really? Huh. I’m one of the 50 people this side of the Atlantic who’s heard of Bebo and you’re telling me there’s some competition in the field? Did not know that.”)
Bebo’s platform will feature a ratings system to make it easy to find good (or at least popular) apps, as well as the ability to fully skin the apps to match your profile. At launch today, they’d around forty developers and companies already working on their apps, including an app for The Office. And some others, but they probably won’t do as well as The Office, even though there’s no word on whether you’ll be able to earn Schrutebucks.
In other platform news, other OpenSocial partners have announcements, too: LinkedIn will launch and Friendster is launching now (via).

The NYTimes.com is seeing 64% more traffic to their site ever since they stopped charging to access the site this past September. The site was converted to free access when they took away what they called TimesSelect. According to comScore, that move gave them an extra 7.5 million readers worldwide. This was as measured from the end of August through the end of October (November numbers are not out yet). Monthly pageviews went up 52 percent also - to 181 million.
TimesSelect was $49.95 a year, or $7.95 a month and free to print subscribers, teachers, and students. The Times is making its archives from 1987 to the present without charge, and public domain years from 1851 to 1922. Other years will be blended with some content free and some paid.
The main reason behind they changed models is that search engines were bringing a new demographic to the site. In the past more people went directly to the site, and they were often regular readers who are loyal to the paper. People coming to the site via search engines were turned off by having to subscribe. Most likely they’re looking at a specific article and want to pick and choose rather than read the entire paper. Sort of like how we want to buy our songs one at a time rather than buying the whole CD.
Right now subscribers generate about $10 million a year in revenue. After running the numbers the Times saw more growth potential in on the internet advertising revenue than in collection for subscriptions.
The Times’s site gets about 13 million unique visitors each month, more than other newspapers. For example, the Wall Street Journal has about 3.6 million uniques a month, and they are considering a similar model.
TechCrunch, a totally on the web news site, got 8 million monthly pageviews worldwide in October, more than News.com. It’s a bit difficult to compare sites when some give unique visitors, others subscribers, and still others report pageviews.
